This was Yamaha Motor's first motorcycle. At a time when motorcycle design was dominated by imposing all-black styling, the YA-1's simple form and chestnut red coloring quickly made it popularly known as “the Red Dragonfly.“ It immediately demonstrated its high performance by winning the 3rd Mt. Fuji Ascent Race in July 1955, and then swept the top three places in the ultra-light class of the 1st Asama Highlands Race later that year. In an era when the average starting salary of a college graduate was around 10,000 yen, the YA-1's 138,000 yen price put it well beyond the reach of most users, but in three years, 11,000 YA-1s were sold.

This was the deluxe version of the YA-1. Its features included a slightly bigger (by 4cc) 2-stroke single-cylinder engine, a black-painted chassis, chrome fuel tank and a battery case, giving it the quality look and feel of a higher grade model. With the chestnut red YA-1 known as the “Aka-tombo“ (Red Dragonfly), the YB-1 came to be called the “Kuro-tombo“ (Black Dragonfly).

As a deluxe version of the YA-1, this model immediately drew public attention when it appeared at the Tokyo Motor Show held in Hibiya Park in April 1956. With a grayish-brown finish, taking its image from the wet pavement of the Champs-Elysees, this model represented a high-level synthesis of design and functionality with features like the first Japanese-made monobloc carburetor. This immediately boosted the brand image of Yamaha Motor and achieved a production goal of 1,000 units a month along with the YA-1.

This is a model born out of a pursuit of design originality. Taking “a 250cc for the Japanese“ as its key words, it was given a compact and easy-to-ride body size that fit the Japanese physique. As successor to the YA-1, the output of the 2-stroke single-cylinder engine was increased by approx. 1 PS and mounted on a newly designed pressed backbone frame. The un-sprung units featured a bottom-linked type front fork and a swinging arm type rear suspension that gave the model a completely new look. Its unique styling that stressed lightness and power won Yamaha its first Good Design Award ever for a motorcycle.

Born as a further development of the YD-1 and YD Racer that participated in the 2nd Asama Highlands Race, this new model mounted a 2-stroke, 2-cylinder 20 hp engine on a steel-pipe cradle frame with features including the first Japanese-made 5-speed transmission and a combination type instrument panel with engine tachometer. As a high-performance sports model that could be outfitted with an abundant offering of race kit parts, it became a leading performer in a variety of categories of both on- and off-road competition.

This 125cc business-use model appeared as the successor to the YA-2. It had the same basic structure of a 2-stroke single-cylinder engine with a piston valve system on a pressed-steel backbone frame, but adopted an electric starter for easier engine starts and an improved carburetor for better fuel economy to improve performance in utility use.

This model followed the 125cc YA-3 as the 4th model of the YA series. Engineered for good drivability in the low- to mid-speed range, the engine newly adopted a rotary disc valve intake. Other features like a seesaw type rotary shift pedal and a telescopic front fork improved operability and comfort, and its exterior design was redone to give it a completely new sporty image.

This model was the successor to the YDS-1 that became famous as a base machine for road races and scramble races. The engine was developed from the acclaimed 2-stroke, 2-cylinder engine of the YDS-1 to deliver an extra 3 hp. To further boost performance in sport riding, a twin-leading front drum brake with dust and water resistant designs and other features were adopted.

This was Yamaha's first production road racer, mounting a 2-stroke, air-cooled, in-line 2-cylinder engine evolved from the modified YDS-1 racer on a newly developed double cradle frame. In December 1962, a version with equipment like headlights to make it street-legal was sold in Japan, distinguishing it from the TD-1A race machine that became available later. The faired racing machine (pictured) was the overseas spec model, while the unfaired model on display is a replica of the one that entered in the 1st All Japan Road Race Championships at Suzuka Circuit in November 1962.

This model mounted a rotary disc valve intake 2-stroke single-cylinder engine with increased cooling efficiency and reliability and adopted many advanced features of the day, including a backbone type monocoque frame, water-resistant drum brakes and megaphone type muffler. The serviceability of the air cleaner, carburetor and clutch were also improved to create a machine that combined sportiness and practicality.

This was the first model that adopted “Autolube,“ Yamaha Motor's unique system to supply engine oil separately and eliminating bothersome mixing with the fuel. A 2-stroke, single-cylinder engine with rotary disc valve air intake inherited from the YA-5 was mounted on a pressed steel monocoque frame. With dustproof/waterproof 150mm front/rear drum brakes and a telescopic front fork, the YA-6 achieved both the great performance expected of a 125cc model and a high level of practicality.

This model was the successor to the TD-1A 250cc production road racer. It mounted an air-cooled, in-line 2-cylinder engine developed from that of the production model YDS-3 on a double cradle frame. In Japan there were few races it could enter due to machine regulations, so it was mostly exported to North America and Europe, where it was used in a variety of races and achieved performance that rivaled factory machines. The model on display is a further evolved later variation with a smart-looking white fuel tank that would be handed down to the TD-1C.

Carrying on the heritage of the YDS Series, the YM1 was the flagship model of Yamaha's sport bikes and capable of higher speeds for riding on the first expressways completed during Japan's era of highway construction. Its 305cc, 2-cylinder engine was the biggest displacement 2-stroke of its kind in the country at the time and was equipped with the “Autolube“ separate oil supply system, twin carburetors and a 5-speed transmission. It could accelerate from a stop to cover 400 meters in 14.7 seconds, and boasted a top speed of over 160 km/h.

Powered by a high-revving 90cc twin engine known as the “Jet Twin,“ this model achieved a high-level balance of excellent performance, fuel economy and utility. This made it a popular choice for a wide range of uses, from sports to business. This was the first-generation “Mate,“ Yamaha Motor's best selling business-use motorcycle series. Adopting the innovative “Autolube“ separate oil supply system, an automatic centrifugal clutch, an underbone frame that integrated everything from the steering head to the rear fender, and other features, it was a model popular for its practicality. This was a minor-change successor to the YDS-3 released in 1964. Retaining the excellent reliability and high-speed durability provided by the “Autolube“ system, the new model had 2 hp more maximum output and a new fender shape. The coloring maintained the traditional candy tone of the YDS series but achieved more of a pop image.

This was the successor model to the YDS series. It was equipped with a parallel 2-cylinder engine with aluminum cylinders, a large capacity clutch, an electric starter, the “Autolube“ system, twin carburetors, and more. These improved power output and drivability. This was Yamaha Motor's first 125cc 2-cylinder sports model. It employed Yamaha's first 5-port (jet port) engine that added two auxiliary scavenging ports to the previous 3-port (intake, scavenging, exhaust) system to improve exhaust efficiency. At a time when there was no clear distinction between on-road and off-road bikes, the DT-1 succeeded in creating a new category known as “trail bikes.“ It boasted technologies and functions expressly for off-road riding like a front fork with the longest stroke of any Japanese model at the time, wide-radius block-pattern tires, an engine guard and more. The DT-1 was explosively popular in the U.S. where off-road sport riding was popular. In Japan, it led to the creation of “Trail Riding Courses“ and “Trail Land“ riding facilities that opened up a new world of riding enjoyment.

This sport model featured clean styling and coloring and was aimed at riders around 20 years of age. Based on the AT90 (released in 1965), it adopted the “Autolube“ system and a twin-carburetor 90cc 2-cylinder engine with a 5-port layout to boost exhaust efficiency. It also featured a sporty return-type 5-speed transmission and a diamond frame of the same strength as a 125cc model in a package that achieved powerful performance with the lightest chassis in its class.

Adoption of a teardrop style fuel tank and independently mounted meters made this a stylish 250cc class sport model. The engine drew on the YDS series' 2-stroke, 2-cylinder tradition and added a 5-port cylinder to boost power for lighter, more agile performance. A scrambler-variation DS6-C with a high-mount muffler was also marketed.

This model was a 50cc road sports bike that mounted an “over-square,“ high-revving, high-output engine on a pressed steel backbone type frame. It featured a racer type seat, a long-shaped fuel tank, straight handlebars and more with intrepid sport bike styling.

This model took the export spec model and rearranged it for the Japanese market in response to the domestic boom in trail riding popularity pioneered by the DT-1. It mounted a 2-stroke, 175cc engine with a single aluminum cylinder on a high-tensile steel pipe double cradle frame. With 125cc class lightness and powerful performance comparable to a 250cc class model, it could be ridden on expressways, allowing for an even wider range of use.

This is one of the series of trail models developed with the same basic concept and design of the big hit model DT-1 launched the previous year. With a powerful 5-port, 125cc engine and return type 5-speed transmission mounted on a strong, lightweight double cradle frame with a Ceriani front fork, it had great running performance on a variety of road surfaces that won a new group of off-road riding fans.

This was Yamaha's first 350cc production racer. Its power unit was developed with the production model R3's engine as its base and it was mounted on a featherbed type double cradle frame of a spec equivalent to a factory racer, while factory spec components were also used for the unsprung components including the suspension and brakes. It was released in 1969 along with the 250cc model TD-2 and was a highly competitive performer in many World GP races.

This was the last model of the 250cc TD series of production racebikes. Developed with the base power unit from the DX250 production model, it debuted in the Road Racing World Championship in 1971. It helped Jarno Saarinen win the GP250 title in 1972 and Dieter Braun to win it in '73. It was called “the world's most competitive production racer.“

This was Yamaha Motor's first 750cc road sport model. At a time when large multi-cylinder engines were most common, Yamaha exhibited its originality by fitting this model with an in-line 2-cylinder engine. Its array of advanced features included a balancer, dry sump lubrication, disc brakes with opposed-piston calipers and aluminum wheel rims. This combination helped achieve a unique feeling of torque and pulse, as well as nimble handling thanks to the slim chassis design.

This was the first Yamaha production motorcycle with a DOHC engine. It had an in-line 2-cylinder layout with 4-valves per cylinder for excellent performance even at high rpm. This was the Formula 750 production racer developed simultaneously with the YZR500. The concept was the same as well and the engine was created on the idea of connecting two blocks of the 2-stroke, liquid-cooled, in-line 2-cylinder TZ350 engine together to make a 700cc in-line 4-cylinder engine and mounting it on a newly designed high-tensile steel pipe double cradle frame. A factory spec TZ750 (0W19) won its debut race in the 1974 Daytona 200-mile Race ridden by Giacomo Agostini, and it also went on to be a winner on the Japanese and world racing scene as well.

This model was the successor to the “World's most competitive production racer,“ the 250cc TD-3. To improve performance stability and power unit durability, liquid cooling was added to the 2-stroke piston intake valve, in-line 2-cylinder engine, and a dry sump clutch was adopted for the first time. This was a production model replica of the YZM250 (0W12) that won the Motocross World Championship and All Japan Motocross Championship titles in 1973. It was the first production model equipped with a Monocross suspension and as a result, it was also called the YZ250M (M for “Monocross“).

This “big single” trail model was outfitted to be street-legal and it was developed with the TT500 endurance competition machine as its base model. It incorporated epoch-making innovations in all areas, including – in a first for off-road vehicles – a forward inclined upside-down rear suspension. It became the machine used by many teams in the early years of the Paris-Dakar Rally. Yamaha also prepared a factory machine based on it that Cyril Neveu won the first two Dakar rallies on.

This was the 50cc model of the TY series of street-legal trial machines. The specs on the off-road bike-specific single-cylinder engine with a piston reed intake valve were changed with emphasis on performance in the low- to mid-speed range. With a double cradle frame, large-diameter tires (18 inches for the front, 16 inches for the rear) and wide handlebars, its looks and performance were on par with up-scale models.

This model embodied a high-level balance of comfort when cruising on the expressway, good running stability and a spirited riding feel. In the quest for high performance, high durability and high reliability, this model adopted unique Yamaha technologies like its compact, laterally-aligned DOHC 3-cylinder engine and a maintenance-free shaft drive. The next year, the GX750II was introduced with a 3-into-2 muffler and a boost in power up to 67PS.

This 50cc sport model had a café racer style design with its large fuel tank, racing type seat and other features. It had a 2-stroke single-cylinder engine with the Torque Induction system and its piston reed valve intake for excellent acceleration and high-rpm range characteristics mounted on a double cradle frame. Its light, agile ride fit its sporty exterior design.

This model ushered in the over-1,000c era for Yamaha motorcycles (it was not sold in Japan). The rear wheel was shaft-driven and the DOHC in-line 4-cylinder 1,100cc engine's awesome power created new excitement among European and American motorcycle enthusiasts. The European-market version had continental handlebars and an oil cooler while the American-market version came with up-slanted handlebars.

This model featured the traditional vertical twin engine of the sport model TX650 as the base power unit. It had features like a teardrop tank, and chopper style handlebars along with a King & Queen seat and short megaphone type muffler, all mounted on 16-inch wheels. It achieved the horseback type riding feeling so popular in North America and would be the predecessor to the “Special“ series of Yamaha American-style cruiser bikes.

The SR500 brought the know-how gained with the XT500 4-stroke enduro bike to a road-going sport model. Its lightweight, slim and compact body; universally appealing simple and timeless styling; and the powerful torque, feeling of acceleration, and pulse “big singles“ are known for won it a unique following of fans. The SR400 created to conform with Japan's license laws became a definitive Yamaha long-seller, spending some 40 years on the market.

One of the models that clearly embodied Yamaha Motor's focus on building motorcycles that are “slim, compact and fun to ride“ was the XJ750E. Locating the generator on the back side of the cylinders in an air-cooled 4-stroke DOHC in-line 4-cylinder format, produced an exceptionally slim engine such as never seen before on the existing 4-cylinder 750cc bikes. Its light weight and highly controllable handling won it the admiration of many fans.

This model was created to provide the same 2-stroke machine appeal as the RZ250 and RZ350, but in a 50cc supersports package. The lightweight, highly rigid double cradle frame mounted a liquid-cooled, 2-stroke, single-cylinder engine with the Yamaha Energy Induction System (YEIS) and a 6-speed close-ratio transmission. The chassis had a Monocross suspension, 18-inch cast wheels for the front and rear and a front disc brake, and the RZ50 boasted the best performance in its class at the time.

The Venture Royale was a long-distance tourer and had the largest displacement and power output of any Yamaha motorcycle at the time. Developed mainly for the North American market, it had a liquid-cooled DOHC 16-valve V4 engine, shaft drive, full-body fairing, AM/FM radio with cassette player, computer-controlled front/rear suspension and more, making this model great for comfortable long-distance cruising. This model's engine became the base for the VMAX launched three years later. On display is a 1983 model.

This was the first Japanese domestic market model with a full fairing designed for optimum aerodynamics. This distinctive supersport model was developed in response to the rapidly growing popularity of sport bikes and diversifying user tastes. This model was developed as a replica of the YZR500 factory works machine that fan favorite “King“ Kenny Roberts rode in the 1983 World Championship. It was the world's first production model to mount a 2-stroke V4 engine and it adopted different induction systems for the forward and rear banks of cylinders: crankcase reed valves in front and piston reed valves in the rear. Among the other innovative technologies employed throughout showcasing Yamaha's spirit of challenge was a horizontally positioned rear suspension mounted under the engine.

This was the long-awaited 4-stroke supersport model Yamaha released to motorcycle fans at a time when the Japanese market was in the midst of its racer replica boom. It featured a liquid-cooled 4-stroke, DOHC, 4-valve, 4-cylinder engine to achieve what was at the time a class-beating 59 hp, along with styling, riding position and equipment suggestive of a racing machine that made it very popular. This was a street-legal trail model that retained the mechanisms, performance and image of Yamaha's competition motocrossers. The development of this 250cc sport model was based on Yamaha Motor's exclusive 4-stroke engine design concept “Genesis.“ A class-first DOHC 4-valve 4-cylinder engine was mounted onto a lightweight, compact body. This model created a stir with its innovative styling that unified the fairing and tank cover and its powerful performance that put it on par with the 2-stroke sport models, something virtually unthinkable in the motorcycle world of the time.

This racer replica model benefited from full feedback of technology and know-how honed in the competitive world of road races. The liquid-cooled, 2-stroke, in-line 2-cylinder engine adopted the crank chamber reed valve air intake system from the YZR500. The Serow, with its name meaning a goat antelope in English, is a mountain trail machine that was developed to have the performance and functionality to enjoy riding deep into mountainous areas. The 4-stroke 225cc single-cylinder engine had an assuring amount of won't-quit power and the lightweight, slim chassis with a low-seat-height suited for mountain fun riding combined to ensure easy, predictable handling that is also suited to around-town riding. It has been loved by a wide range of riders, including not only off-road fans but also women and beginners and is a long-selling model that has expanded the world of motorcycling enjoyment.

This 50cc sport model had the look of a re-shaped, scaled-down YZR500 factory racer that appealed to the spirit of race enthusiasts in a playful way. The 2-stroke single-cylinder engine had a maximum output of 7 hp and a return type 5-speed transmission, front disc brake and other features to offer full-fledged sport riding potential. It became a standard in the mini-bike races popular at the time.

Only 2,500 of these were produced and sold, as a base for developing a racing machine. It had specs like a single seat and footpegs positioned 40 mm rearward to make it immediately eligible for All Japan TT-F3 (Formula 3) races.

This model featured a 200cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with a crankcase reed valve intake, YEIS to smooth out intake pulse, YPVS to heighten exhaust efficiency, a flat valve carburetor for better response and more, mounted on a truss frame designed for a high-level balance of both rigidity and light weight. This model was a scaled-down 50cc replica of the on/off-road TDR250 sport model. It featured a newly developed 2-stroke single-cylinder engine with a piston reed intake valve, 140/130 mm of wheel travel in the front and rear suspensions, 12-inch cast wheels, disc brakes and more. Its light and spirited running performance when riding around was likened to “swimming through the town.“

This machine benefited fully from feedback of the technology of the YZF750 factory machine, which had successive wins at the 1987 and 1988 Suzuka 8-hour endurance races. Incorporating a new-design aluminum Deltabox frame, a 5-valve DOHC in-line 4-cylinder engine with titanium connecting rods, a 6-speed close-ratio transmission and an Ohlins rear suspension, this flagship model also boasted exceptionally high performance and quality as a base for a racing machine. Sales in Japan were limited to 500.

This adventure touring machine had features throughout stemming from feedback from years of experience in the Dakar Rally. The liquid-cooled DOHC, 5-valve, in-line 2-cylinder engine employing a 360-degree crank for excellent performance in all speed ranges was mounted on a high-tensile steel pipe double cradle frame. The chassis, with its short wheelbase design, was equipped with a 43 mm diameter front fork, link-type rear suspension, three brake discs and more.

This was a full model change of the big sport tourer FJ1100 model launched on the European market in 1984. It raised the maturity of the original model as a tourer by mounting an air-cooled DOHC in-line 4-cylinder engine scaled up to 1200cc on a high-rigidity lateral frame with Yamaha Motor's unique vibration-reducing Orthogonal Mounting. The FJ1200A on display adopted a state-of-the-art ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) when it was re-released in Europe and Japan. The standard model was the FJ1200.

The FZX250 Zeal’s powerplant was based on the liquid-cooled 4-cylinder engine from the popular and racy FZR250, but refined for greater usability on the street. With a seat height on par with a cruiser, the development concept was “People-friendly, rider-friendly” and the engineering team sought to create a bike one could approach and ride like enjoying sports and music. The key words for creating the Zeal’s styling were “curvy,” “muscular,” and “dynamic” and the bike’s looks were inspired by the image of a dolphin flying into the air.

This was the third model of the TZR 2-stroke supersport series. It featured a newly developed single-axis crank, 90-degree V-twin engine mounted on an aluminum Deltabox frame. It was also full of technology from the YZR250 World GP machine that won the 250cc class title in 1990, such as an upside-down front fork and an aluminum swingarm. All this made it a machine that offered an enjoyable, top-level sport riding experience.

This model was developed aiming for a combination of light, sporty performance, enjoyable touring performance and ease of use that would fit the riding environment of European mountain roads. The XTZ750 Super Ténéré's in-line 2-cylinder engine with 360-degree crank was bored out for an extra 100cc of displacement and mounted on a steel Deltabox frame. Furthermore, the adoption of features like a down-draft carburetor and wide-ratio 5-speed transmission helped achieve a torquey, dynamic ride. In 1992, a Japanese market model was also introduced.

This 600cc touring model was developed with a focus on everyday riding. The newly designed air-cooled, forward-inclined, in-line 4-cylinder engine came with a downdraft intake system. The system's layout made the intake passage from the air cleaner through to the intake ports as straight as possible, and this combination gave the bike easy-to-use torque and good output in the low- and mid-speed ranges, and a pleasing feeling of acceleration. The chassis adopted a high-tensile steel pipe double cradle frame and highly aerodynamic cowls to give the rider a relaxed and enjoyable cruising experience. It won a large number of motorcycle touring fans overseas as well.
