This distinctive supersport model was developed in response to the rapidly growing popularity of sport bikes and diversifying user tastes. It mounted a slim, high-output 4-stroke V-twin engine with acceleration pump-equipped downdraft carburetors and the Yamaha Induction Control System (YICS) on a lightweight pipe backbone frame designed for a low center of gravity. This gave it sharp, well-balanced performance.
