Preface

The chart below is from the Japanese Industrial Standards and is based on the information contained in ISO 16220: Magnesium and magnesium alloys−Magnesium alloy ingots and castings (2nd revision) published in 2005.

Note(1) The abbreviation of “RE” means the rare earth elements other than yttrium (Y).

NOTES 1. When harmful impurities other than those specified in this table are supposed to exist, the tolerance limit for the impurities may be specified as agreed upon between the purchaser and the manufacturer. However, the specified value shall not exceed 0.01% (mass friction).

    2. The RE elements in casting Class 8 and casting Class 10 are mainly cerium (Ce).

    3. The RE elements in casting Class 9 and casting Class 14 are the didymium which is composed of at least 70 % (mass fraction) neodymium (Nd) and most of the remainder praseodymium (Pr).

    4. The RE elements in casting Class 12 are neodymium (Nd) of 2.0 to 2.5 % (mass fraction) and other heavy rare elements.

    5. The RE elements in casting Class 13 are neodymium (Nd) of 1.5 to 2.0 % (mass fraction) and other heavy rare elements.

    6. The content of lithium (Li) of casting Class 12 and casting Class 13 shall be 0.2 % or less (mass fraction).
