This model was introduced as the successor to the XJR1200 road sports model popular for its clean naked model styling. Its air-cooled, in-line 4-cylinder engine had increased displacement and featured Yamaha-exclusive ceramic composite-plated cylinders, and forged aluminum pistons known for their light weight and high level of heat and friction resistance. It also featured revised suspension settings and tire sizes that gave it a powerful, light and agile ride with a refined, composed character worthy of its status as a flagship model.
