This model was a further development of the XJ400 launched the previous year as Yamaha's first 400cc class model with a 4-stroke, DOHC, 4-cylinder engine. Its engine had Yamaha's signature slim, compact design and adopted YICS (Yamaha Induction Control System) to achieve a maximum output of 45PS and a boost in fuel economy of more than 20%. Furthermore, it featured improved low- to mid-speed torque, front forks with pneumatic and coil spring cushioning, rear suspension with two adjustable dampers, a 4-pipe muffler and more to achieve even more outstanding running performance and polished styling.
