This pure sport model provided an exciting experience of the 2-stroke engine at its very best. It featured a powerful engine pumping out 140 hp per liter of displacement, Yamaha’s exclusive Monocross suspension and lightweight cast wheels for incredible performance, and the styling suggestive of the TZ250 racebike won it many fans. Together with its RZ350 sister model, it helped reverse the market trend of decreasing 2-stroke engine development and the shift toward 4-stroke models, pioneering the later boom in racer replica models.
