This was the last YZR500 series factory machine to mount a 2-stroke engine. It featured pistons forged from lightweight, high-strength powder metal, optimized intake and exhaust systems, a new engine mounting position and revised chassis weight balance that combined to improve acceleration and handling performance. Competing against 4-stroke machines that year, Olivier Jacque won the pole position at the German GP. Norifumi Abe also obtained a ranking of 6th on it to prove its great competitive potential to the end.
