Based on the 2017 machine, this YZR-M1 brought refinements to various parts of the engine and chassis. Also, Yamaha developed new “sidepods” for the bodywork to generate downforce from the outside and made other changes to improve aerodynamic performance. While Maverick Viñales took Yamaha’s only win, the machine powered him as well as Valentino Rossi to the podium five times. The Italian finished the season in 3rd and the Spaniard in 4th.
