This 990cc MotoGP factory machine featured a newly developed DOHC 4-valve uneven interval firing engine with a crossplane crankshaft to achieve more linear throttle response and improve traction characteristics. Also, refinements to the Idle Control System helped achieve a good engine-braking feel. The frame and rear arm featured new designs that helped realize both superb handling and stability. Valentino Rossi rode this machine to nine season wins and delivered Yamaha its first MotoGP title.
