(1984 / Racing Machine)

The “YZM500(0W64)” is the machine that was the ridden by Hakan Carlqvist in the 1983 500cc Motocross World championship to win six of the 12 rounds and take the championship title. A more matured version based on the 0W64 took part in the 1984 season. At that time, the “YZ125/YZ250” models were powered by liquid-cooled engines, but the “500cc model also featuring a liquid-cooled engine had a disadvantage due to its excessive weight,” which led to maturation of the model with the adoption of an air-cooled single-cylinder engine featuring unique ideas such as a flat wall in part of the chamber that served to send cooling air-flow to the cylinder head.
- Engine type: Air-cooled, 2-stroke, single-cylinder, 498cm³
- Piston reed intake valve
- Transmission: 4-speed
- Maximum power output: over 41.2 kW (56 PS)
