The "YZF-R1" was developed as a model that embodied the philosophy of the MotoGP machine "YZR-M1”, and to be No.1 (fastest) on the racetrack. The “YZF-R1” was launched in 1998 as the 1st-generation model with the aim of providing the full excitement of riding on twisty roads, but this model changed direction to become one for race and circuit riding as an embodiment of a “pure supersport machine”. It featured a cross plane engine with titanium conrods and magnesium wheels as well as the first 6-axis IMU (attitude sensor) ever on mass-production machine, etc., thus achieving a high level of running performance and high-level handling. This made it a dominant force in the SUZUKA 8-hours and on the domestic and overseas race scenes.
