This was a factory machine for the World Championship that was developed based on the YZ400F production motocrosser. While focusing on the development themes of light weight, compact dimensions and high output, engine performance was boosted with increased displacement, a specially designed aluminum frame was adopted and refinements were made in the suspension for heightened handling and off-road performance. Andrea Bartolini took the 500cc championship title, and helped Yamaha win the Manufacturer title for the first time since 1978.
