(1972 / Production Model)
This sport model employed Yamaha's proprietary Torque Induction system introduced in 1971, giving it performance praised as "on a different level" for 50cc class motorcycles at the time. Its cafe racer styling,* characterized by the slim, large 8-liter fuel tank and racer-like seat, and features like its "One Key, Three Lock" system (a single key for the main switch, handlebar lock and seat lock) made it-and the off-road MR50 sold alongside it-popular among young riders.
*This is a style of motorcycle that originated in London in the U.K. in the 1960s before spreading in popularity worldwide. It is part of motorcycle culture strongly tied to a certain kind of fashion and had a large effect on society at the time.
