Yamaha Motor Partners to Modernize Angola's Fisheries -Enhancing Small-Scale Fisheries through FRP and Outboards-
August 21, 2025
IWATA, August 21, 2025 - Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (Tokyo: 7272) announced today that it has entered into a strategic partnership with nine parties, including the Government of the Republic of Angola, Marino Forum21 (a Japanese General Incorporated Association), and NEC Corporation (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo), to support the modernization of Angola's artisanal fisheries and fishing boats. Based on this agreement, the participating parties will collaborate to explore the establishment of sustainable resource management and value chains, with the aim of contributing to the development of Angola's fisheries sector and achieve an economical improvement in local fishers.
The partnership was presented at the ceremony held on August 21ˢᵗ in The Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9).
The partnership includes nine parties: from the Republic of Angola - the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources; the governmental institution Institute for the Development Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture; and the state-owned enterprise EDIPESCA U.E.E-NAMIBE; as well as R&S LDA, Yamaha Motor's distributor. From Japan - Marino Forum21 (a general incorporated association), NEC Corporation, Nitto Seimo Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo), Taiyo A&F Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo), and Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. Under the partnership, the participating organizations and companies will carry out activities such as resource management studies, support for the introduction of FRP (fiberglass-reinforced plastic) boats in small-scale fisheries, training on fishing techniques, and the development and implementation of resource management methods based on digital transformation (DX) technologies.
Yamaha Motor will support R&S LDA, which is exploring the introduction of FRP boats for local small-scale fishers, by conducting market research and providing technical assistance and guidance for the deployment of FRP boats in the sector.
Located in southwestern Africa, Angola has a long Atlantic coastline and is rich in marine resources. While the region holds strong growth potential through the development of its fisheries industry, many of the boats used in artisanal, small-scale fisheries are wooden and lack safety and durability, posing challenges in operational safety, efficiency, hygiene control of catches, and export competitiveness. At the same time, the development of the fisheries industry has led to increased catches and a growing need to establish a sustainable resource management system, including measures to address illegal operations by foreign vessels.
This partnership was formed following market research on the introduction of FRP boats in Angola, which led to an agreement between local authorities and Japanese companies operating in the country to discuss and investigate issues and explore solutions for the development of Angola's fisheries sector.
Since the 1960s, Yamaha Motor has been expanding into the African market, and through collaboration with local distributors, the company now operates in 52 countries and regions across the continent, offering market-driven solutions tailored to local needs. Recognizing the strong potential of the African market-driven by rapid population growth and the rise of the middle class-Yamaha Motor will continue to focus on the region and actively pursue further business expansion.
As a comprehensive marine manufacturer, Yamaha Motor is committed to promoting the sustainable growth of coastal fisheries through protection of resources and coexistence with the environment. At TICAD9, the company is presenting its vision for a new Blue Economy built on the modernization of fisheries that prioritizes the safety of navigation and operations for fishers, while supporting the development of coastal fisheries and related industries.
Through this partnership, Yamaha Motor aims to promote the introduction of FRP boats and outboard motors that align with local market needs in Angola, while working to strengthen trust in the Yamaha brand and expand future product sales in the country.
