Carrying on the heritage of the YDS Series, the YM1 was the flagship model of Yamaha’s sport bikes and capable of higher speeds for riding on the first expressways completed during Japan’s era of highway construction. Its 305cc, 2-cylinder engine was the biggest displacement 2-stroke of its kind in the country at the time and was equipped with the “Autolube” separate oil supply system, twin carburetors and a 5-speed transmission. It could accelerate from a stop to cover 400 meters in 14.7 seconds, and boasted a top speed of over 160 km/h.
