This model was created to provide the same 2-stroke machine appeal as the RZ250 and RZ350, but in a 50cc supersports package. The lightweight, highly rigid double cradle frame mounted a liquid-cooled, 2-stroke, single-cylinder engine with the Yamaha Energy Induction System (YEIS) and a 6-speed close-ratio transmission. The chassis had a Monocross suspension, 18-inch cast wheels for the front and rear and a front disc brake, and the RZ50 boasted the best performance in its class at the time.
