Based on the 2019 machine, this YZR-M1 refined the engine and chassis components. Yamaha began developing its own holeshot device aiming to raise competitiveness. However, the global COVID-19 pandemic struck before the season began, triggering confusion and various restrictions on machine development, holding races, and more. Despite the circumstances, Fabio Quartararo made four starts from pole position and clinched three victories. Maverick Viñales started from pole three times and also took the win in Misano II, exhibiting the machine’s potential.
