This was a 500cc class motocross factory machine. It was the first motocrosser to adopt an aluminum frame and represented a further maturation of the 1987 YZM500 that had a newly developed liquid-cooled, 2-stroke engine. Kurt Ljungqvist rode this machine to rank 4th in the 1987 Motocross World Championship, and Jacky Vimond ranked 5th with it in 1988, after which Yamaha suspended factory participation in the 500cc class. So this became Yamaha's last 500cc 2-stroke competition motocrosser.
