This was Yamaha's first production trial machine. It mounted a 2-stroke single-cylinder engine based on the DT250, the successor to the DT-1 that created so many off-road sport riding fans, on a specially designed diamond type frame made of high-tensile steel pipe. This model won ardent fans in Europe, North America, Australia and other markets. In Japan, the street-legal model TY250J with turn signals and other safety features was released.
