(1984 / Production Model)
This was the long-awaited 4-stroke supersport model Yamaha released to motorcycle fans at a time when the Japanese market was in the midst of its racer replica boom. It featured a liquid-cooled 4-stroke, DOHC, 4-valve, 4-cylinder engine to achieve what was at the time a class-beating 59 hp, along with styling, riding position and equipment suggestive of a racing machine that made it very popular. The simultaneously developed Formula 3 racer FZR400 also created attention by becoming the first championship-winning machine of the All-Japan Championships in 1984.
