This 1,600cc DOHC engine was developed based on the Toyota 2T power unit. It was mounted in numerous representative Toyota sports cars of the 1970s, including the first-generation Celica 1600GT, a model that opened up a new category of "specialty cars" in the Japanese market, and the Corolla Levin, a sports version of the ubiquitous Toyota Corolla. This engine was used in a number of representative Toyota sports cars throughout the 1970s, and a total of 300,000 units were produced into the 1980s.
