Born July 1955. In 1982, joined the Yamaha Agostini Team and achieved his first win in the Daytona 200 the season's curtain-raiser. Made his mark in gaining an 11th consecutive win for Yamaha at Daytona. In that year, although failing to achieve a World GP win, showed stable speeds and beat riders like Kenny Roberts and Barry Sheene to achieve Yamaha's highest ranking of 2nd (five podium finishes).
Started racing in 1974. Rode in the New Zealand Superbike Race and other events, and in 1978 was invited by Moriwaki to ride in the Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race for the first time. From 1980 he was signed with Suzuki. He participated in the World GP500 and achieved a ranking of 8th. In 1980, cancelled plans to race in the Finland GP, which clashed with the Suzuka 8 Hours, and achieved a win in the Suzuka 8 Hours and a ranking of 5th in the GP500.
