54mm bore, powder-metal piston adopted

The major new feature of this model was the new engine with bore x stroke spec changed from 56x50.6mm to 54x54mm. This succeeded in boosting top speed by achieving a better balance of power and torque character based on total intake/exhaust efficiency rather than simply raising rpm. This model was also characterized by its forged "powder metal" piston with excellent heat resistance qualities and a new frame design that eliminated the seat rail. Riding this machine, Norick Abe scored his first GP victory at the Japan GP, shaving approximately two seconds off his qualifying time to record the fastest lap. Also on the OWJ1, L. Capirossi won the final round of the season, the Australian GP.
