Yamaha Motor and Volvo Penta have entered into a technical agreement to develop boat control systems

December 6, 2010

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. announces the signing of an agreement on December 1, 2010 with the Swedish manufacturer of marine engines, AB Volvo Penta (Representative: Goran Gummeson, CEO; headquarters: Gothenburg, Sweden) for the joint development of control systems for boats powered by outboard motors.

The outboard motor boat control systems to be developed under this agreement enable boat operation and handling that reflects the will of the pilot more directly by combining the power control and steering functions in a single remote control system. These systems are more pilot-friendly and make it easier for even novice users to perform tasks such as piloting a boat in confined areas of the marina or waterways.
The joint development of such systems will bring together Yamaha Motor's expertise in outboard propulsion systems and Volvo Penta's expertise in steering system control technology. The project aims to undertake a wider scope of boat control system development including not only systems for outboards but also for Volvo Penta's marine diesel engines.

As a manufacturer of marine and commercial-use diesel engines, Volvo Penta boasts a diverse lineup of engines ranging from 12 hp to 900 hp and is recognized worldwide for the quality of its technology and after-sales service. Volvo Penta is also known for the development and commercialization of advanced technologies and products not only for engines but also in the fields of boat propulsion and boat steering control systems. A prominent example is the revolutionary IPS (Inboard Performance System) marketed in 2005.

Yamaha Motor aims to heighten competitiveness in the market by utilizing the combined expertise to the fullest in bringing products of the highest quality and reliability to the global marine market.
