Cultivating Appreciation of the Ocean and the Water

Accepting entries for the
10th Yamaha Children's Seascape Painting Contest

By Japan Marine Sports Promotion Foundation

The Japan Marine Sports Promotion Foundation is holding its 10th Yamaha Nationwide Children's Seascape Painting Contest and will be accepting entries from elementary school and nursery age children throughout the country from July 1 (Wednesday) to October 20 (Tuesday) of this year.

By having children paint scenes of the oceans and beaches, this annual contest gives children a valuable opportunity to increase their understanding and awareness of the sea and cultivates in them the spirit of protecting the global environment.

The foundation seeks to develop sound marine leisure activities in Japan, and aggressively undertakes activities to promote marine sports such as sailing, canoeing, and rowing to further their acceptance. Worldwide environmental problems such as global warming and acid rain have become increasingly serious, we believe that it is very important to pass along to future generations the natural beauty of the oceans and the lakes for people who also want to enjoy marine sports.
Building on that thought, the foundation enlisted the financial support and cooperation of the Yamaha Motor group to hold the Seascape Painting Contest.

The number and quality of last year's 8,098 submissions made it an enriching contest. Among the entrants were children from Mexico who had learned of the contest from the Yamaha Motor Internet home page, one six-year-old Mexican boy received a Bronze Prize for his work. New backing has been received from the Ministry of Education and the Environment Agency thanks to their understanding of the spirit of the contest this time.
And since this year is also the "International Year of the Ocean," the proposal for which was put forth by UNESCO C, the organization representing UNESCO in Japan, National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan, has also lent its support to the contest this year. With the arrival of this tenth mile stone year, we are making every effort to make sure the meaning of the contest is understood through the entrants and exhibition sites.

The winning entries will be displayed at the Yamaha Motor booth at the 1999 Tokyo International Boat Show, at other Yamaha event sites throughout the country as well as in Yamaha promotional tools and the Yamaha Motor Internet home page.

*International Year of the Ocean

The UNESCO IOC (Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission) requested that UNESCO declare 1998 the International Year of the Ocean on the occasion of th
e opening of an international oceanic exposition in Lisbon. UNESCO made the proposal to the U.N. General Assembly during the 1994 session, and after del
iberation, 1998 was approved as the International Year of the Ocean. There are three goals for the International Year of the Ocean: 1) to raise the cons
ciousness of people in terms of the oceans and coastal areas as a limited resource, 2) to get the governments of all countries to take action, provide s ufficient resources, and convince them to guarantee giving suitable priority to the oceans, and 3) to press for global-scale scientific cooperation.
