The 32nd Tokyo motor show

October 22, 1997

Welcome to the Yamaha booth

The Yamaha booth at the 32nd Tokyo Motor Show is organized around the theme
"Touching your heart with a motorcycle" "The Man - Machine Relationship." Yamaha believes that the true pleasure of motorcycling is the joy of riding them and the Kando (simultaneous feelings of deep satisfaction and intense excitement) of discovering wonderful new scenery on them. This kind of fun riding is manifested in the new motorcycle models we present here and the unique ways they are displayed.

Particularly in the design of the exhibitions, you will find a strong appeal for Yamaha's design concept of unity within "The Man-Machine Relationship" that all our motorcycles are born from. Yamaha's development philosophy of building human sensibilities into every motorcycle is expressed in the form of seven semispherical platforms representing the five human senses, Yamaha quality and the Yamaha Spirit.

On the center stage, multi-vision display is used to play exciting video images depicting the riding worlds of our main models. To the left of this central stage is displayed the YZF-R1, an entirely new model that ushers in a new age of supersport excitement. On the right-hand stage is a display of the machine that has opened a revolutionary new era in the history of motocross, the YZ400F, and its enduro version, the WR400F. Beyond that, a display of the Drag Star Classic offers the vision of a fresh world of American-style motorcycling.

Meanwhile, on the north side of the central area of the booth, a variety of sports machines including the XJR1300, Lanza Super Bikers, Serow GPS, RZ50 and BW's show a stunning range of Yamaha originality. On the stage opposite these models a new commuter world is proposed by models ranging from the 125cc scooter Cygnus 125 Si to the electro-hybrid bicycle PAS.

YZF-R1

Exhibition model (Export spec)

With an ultra-light 177 kg body and a newly developed 998cc liquid cooled DOHC 5-valve 4-cylinder high-response engine that pumps out 150ps, this exciting machine represents a new generation supersport model with an amazing 1.18 power to weight ratio.
The key words in the development concept were "King of the twisting roads."
We succeeded in achieving a high-level balance between the actual speed and the perceived excitement of the rider on the continuous curves of a winding road.
The newly developed engine features the Yamaha-original 5-valve system that
gives high intake and combustion efficiency. An extremely compact design is achieved with features like a one-piece cylinder and upper crankcase
assembly, lightweight magnesium alloy cylinder head cover, forged aluminum pistons plus a triangular positioning of the three axis points (drive shaft, main shaft and crank shaft).

YZF-R1 Exhibition model (Export spec)

As a result, this engine is roughly ten kilograms lighter than the YZF1000R's engine, as well as being virtually as compact as a twin. This power unit is mounted on an aluminum "Deltabox II" frame that boasts an optimum balance of lightness and rigidity. Further compactness and weight reduction is achieved by using the engine as a stressed member in the frame. By moving the pivot position farther forward it was possible to adopt a long 582 mm rear arm while at the same time shortening the wheelbase to 1395 mm. The effect of an even 50 : 50 front-rear weight distribution also contributes to give the YZF-R1 outstandingly agility in the curves for top performance riding

YZ400F

Exhibition model (Planned as production model)

This is Yamaha's first 4-stroke production motocross machine developed around the technology of the YZM400F factory machine that won six races of the '97 500cc Motocross World GP and the final round of the '97 AMA Supercross series. It has been developed with the goal of being nothing less than "the fastest 4-stroke motocrosser."
This model's newly developed power unit adopts a lightweight, compact design with a liquid-cooled DOHC 5-valve single-cylinder format. A single-shaft balancer is also adopted to reduce rider fatigue. FCR carburetors are adopted to achieve superior response.
The chassis structure shares the same basic structure and dimensions as that on the YZ250 production motocrosser with its 24-year record of proven competitive performance. Also adopted is a new semi-double cradle frame incorporating an integrated oil tank that uses the down-tube and the interior of the gussets as the oil tank to ensure sufficient ground clearance.
In its many other features, like the suspension and brakes, the same components as those on the YZ250 are used to ensure the same outstanding performance characteristics and competitiveness.
In this way the YZ400F is answering the needs of the 500cc World GP, where 4-stroke machines are drawing increasing attention, and the U.S. market where users have been hoping for the appearance of 4-stroke competition machines.

WR400F

Exhibition model (Export spec)

This model takes the YZ400F as its base and adds modifications necessary for participation in enduro competition.
The FCR carburetors with superior response characteristics featured on this model have been given different settings. The air cleaner box is a silent type with an added duct.
The transmission has been given wider ratios to make optimum use of the engine's gutsy power development for outstanding riding performance.
This model is built to deliver high competitive potential in all types of enduro races with additional features like a 12-liter fuel tank with built in reserve function, special seat and side cover, an 18-inch rear wheel, a sealed chain, tail light with steel bracket, an H4 bulb headlight (12V 60W), a 100mm diameter AC generator to accommodate the H4 bulb, a tripmeter and a frame-mounted side stand.

V-MAX Special

Exhibition model (Prototype)

This model mounts a liquid-cooled 4-stroke, DOHC, 4-valve, 1200cc V4 engine. Based on the V-MAX, which has won popularity at home and abroad for its impressive macho image, distinctive exterior styling and torque-y power, this model takes that highly individualistic character one step further. New parts in the brake and suspension systems accent its elemetalism even more.
In addition to new carbon parts in the fuel tank and front and rear fender assemblies, this special version also features Brembo caliper brakes and Ohlins rear suspension. (On the V-MAX the actual fuel tank is positioned under the seat and what looks like the fuel tank is the air cleaner cover.)

XJR1300

Exhibition model (Planned as production model)

This bike is a further evolution of the XJR1200, a machine that claims the title of "king of the naked bikes" with its gutsy torque, sharp acceleration response and neutral handling feel.
The cylinders were bored up 2mm from 77 to 79 to create the largest displacement air-cooled 4-cylinder model, which boasts a maximum output of 100ps/8,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 10.0kgf・m/6,000rpm (compared to 97ps/8,000rpm and 9.3kgf・m/6,000rpm for the existing XJR1200). New equipment includes an aluminum side cover, a tail lens with multiple reflectors and a new-design seat cowl. The tire sizes have been changed (front 130 to 120 / rear 170 to 180) for more mature handling. Other touches like and a new meter panel with twin trip odometers and liquid crystal display clock help complete the image of a more powerful and exciting "big naked model."

XJR400R

Exhibition model (Planned as production model)

An exterior with traditional motorcycle good looks and outstanding riding performance give the XJR400R its popularity as an air-cooled "naked" sports bike. Maintaining its true XJR character, this new version is design for even more feeling of powerfulness and sturdiness. The silver finish on the engine stresses the metallic impression. Other features include a large new fuel tank that gives the impression of a 750, new side cover and tail cowl, a tail lens with multiple reflectors and, for the first time on a naked model, a large new meter panel with a clock and twin trip odometers. Also adopted is a new-design seat with excellent riding comfort and foot placement qualities.
