YZR-M1 (0WU5)

A standardized engine control unit was implemented for all MotoGP bikes that season. Factory option teams were still allowed to develop their own software for the spec ECU, but work to meet numerous other rule changes were necessary, such as the ban on mid-season engine development and being allowed to only run a maximum 20 liters of fuel. Faced with these challenges, Yamaha introduced its own seamless gearbox and made other modifications to up the YZR-M1’s competitiveness. Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo each took a pair of wins, ranking 2nd and 3rd for the season, respectively.
