This model overturned the traditional “leg-over mounting” approach, and made the “step through” scooter style a permanent feature of 50cc commuter models. It incorporated many innovative ideas, including a design that fully covered the engine and drive train area to give a clean, approachable image and virtually remove the fear of getting one's clothes dirty, a rider-friendly automatic centrifugal clutch and hand-operated rear brakes. The Passol attracted many new customers—especially women—and created a new market for what came to be known as "soft bikes."
