Born December 1945. Interested in racing from a very early age and rode in the unique ice races of Northern Europe, becoming Finland champion in 1965. In 1967, switched to road racing. Participated in World GP racing from time to time while studying mechanical engineering at university. After graduating in the spring of 1971, turned to full-fledged participation in the World GP 250cc and 350cc classes with the support of Finland's Yamaha product and sales company. He achieved his first win and sason rankings of 3rd and 2nd. The following year, he finally took the 250cc title. In the 350cc class, he also retained his 2nd ranking and in 1973 became Yamaha's first 500cc factory rider.
With a riding style that was at once dynamic and precise, he was affectionately known to his many fans as "the Flying Finn." In May of the same year (1973) in the 250cc class finals of the Italian GP, he was caught up in a crash soon after the start of the race and tragically lost his life at the age of 27 years and six months.
