On the 0WS5 a review of the machine dimensions led to improvement of the front-rear weight distribution that contributed to faster cornering speeds. The frame underwent improvements that increased rigidity roughly 20% in the longitudinal direction and 10% in the torsional direction while reducing lateral rigidity by about 10% to achieve the desired flexibility to enable even better handling performance. Improvements in the airflow through the fairing helped reduce coolant temperature by an average of 10 degrees C. and the oil temperature by 15 degrees to improve reliability in engine performance. An important new feature of this engine was the adoption of a pneumatic valve system. Revisions were also made to the port and combustion chamber shapes. The sum of these improvements boosted max. output by 12% and max. torque by 8% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile the new valve system was 40% lighter and other improvements like optimization of the link mechanism and improvements in the lubrication system reduced friction loss. All of this contributed to higher top speed and improved fuel economy at the same time.
Improvements were also made in the EMS. The improved capability to calculate optimum torque based on input on acceleration, suspension stroke and gyro function, etc., plus banking angle and tire friction, enabled better traction control function and helped optimize tire performance.
