Motorcycle Production Begins at New, Second Manufacturing Plant in Vietnam 700,000 Unit Annual Production Capacity Planned by 2010

October 14, 2008

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. announces that motorcycle production began yesterday on the first assembly line of Yamaha Motor Vietnam Co., Ltd.'s (YMVN) new, second manufacturing plant constructed to increase production capacity to 700,000 units annually by 2010 in response to the strong growth in sales of motorcycles in the Vietnamese market. The total investment for the construction and equipping of the new factory is approximately US $44 million (approximately 4.4 billion yen).

The new, second factory occupies a site measuring approximately 164,000m2 in Noi Bai Industrial Zone about 15 km south of the existing, first factory in Hanoi's Soc Son Industrial Zone. Construction began on the new, second plant in July 2007 and the factory building itself was completed in March 2008. The new plant will produce 110cc-135cc motorcycles at a rate of approximately 1,000 units per day on the first assembly line. Plans call for a second assembly line to be added in 2009 and a third in 2010, when the plant will reach full production capacity, employing approximately 2,000 personnel and increasing YMNV's current production capacity at the first factory by 50%.

With the start of operations at the new, second factory, production of finished motorcycles now conducted at the first factory will be shifted in stages to the new factory. Measures will be taken at the new factory to gradually increase capacity in accordance with market demand. The first factory, together with Yamaha Motor's local group company, Yamaha Motor Parts Manufacturing Vietnam Co., Ltd. (YPMV), which began operating in 2006 manufacturing motorcycle parts, will engage in the production of cast and machined parts to be supplied to the new, second factory for finished motorcycle assembly.

In Vietnam, the status of motorcycles as a vital means of transportation is well established, and overall demand for motorcycles has been growing year by year due to the country's political and economic stability and the lifting of motorcycle registration restrictions in 2005. Yamaha Motor's proactive approach to the market, including the introduction of automatic transmission models and other 4-stroke motorcycles, along with a range of promotional activities conducted nationwide, has generated strong sales growth, from 350,000 units in 2006 to 500,000 units in 2007. This year, Yamaha Motor expects sales to rise by 25% year-on-year to 620,000 units.
