Preventative Safety Technologies

"Road-Vehicle Collaborative System"

[Research and Development Aim]
The aim was the research and development of vehicle-side data processing technologies to make use of traffic information generated by next generation traffic system combining the ASV technologies promoted by the Ministry of Transport and the AHS (Advanced Cruise Assist Highway System) technologies promoted by the Ministry of Construction to create a safer and more comfortable driving environment, and also to develop the human interface technologies to supply this traffic information to the rider.

[Features of the System (Motorcycle rider support)]
Human interface systems that supply information to the rider in the form of (1) "audible support" by means of a receiver built into the helmet and (2) "visual support" in the form of icons that appear on the monitor on the meter panel, are combined to achieve system that supports the rider in proper recognition and decision-making concerning the traffic environment.

The actual functions include communicating information about the traffic environment received from the road-vehicle communications system to the rider in the form of appropriate verbal messages such as "Beware of ~" and visual information in the form of icons with varying shapes and colors and flashing that help the rider to make instantaneous judgments about the type and urgency of the message. The items of riding support handled by this system include:

1) Curve overshooting prevention support that communicates information about the shape of the curve, etc., on poor-visibility curves.
2) Forward obstacle collision prevention support that detects obstacles like stopped vehicles or fallen objects before a curve.
3) Crossing collision prevention support (stopping) that informs the rider the distance to the stop line of an intersection.
4) Crossing collision prevention support (starting up) that informs the rider of approaching vehicles on the intersecting road at an intersection.
5) Right turn collision prevention support that informs the vehicle of approaching vehicles in the oncoming lane.
6) Crossing pedestrian collision prevention support that informs of the presence of pedestrians at crosswalks.
