On February 5, 2008, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (the "Company") announced that it had registered a 15,530 million yen extraordinary loss as a "special provision for accrual for product liabilities" for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2007. The special provision arose in light of product liability responsibility for side-by-side vehicles (SSVs) produced by Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America, the Company's U.S. transportation equipment manufacturing subsidiary. Against a backdrop of recent claims involving SSVs, the Company allocated a further 4,896 million yen to the special provision, and registered the allocation under selling, general and administrative expenses for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending December 31, 2009.
