Mounting the world's first electronic-control variable air funnel (intake duct) on a production motorcycle The new 2007 European market Yamaha "YZF-R1" debuts at "Intermot 2006"

Oct. 10, 2006

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (YMC) announces the debut of the new 2007 European market model the Yamaha "YZF-R1" at the "Intermot 2006" (international motorcycle and scooter exhibition) opening on October 11, 2006 (press day – Oct. 10) for a five-day run in Cologne, Germany.

This new model represents the 5th remake of the YZF-R1 since it first appeared in 1998 and it has been completely redesigned under a product concept of the "Fastest Supersport." Its main new features include, (1) a newly designed liquid-cooled 4-cylinder engine that adopts the "YCC-I" (Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake), an electronic-control servo motor-driven variable air funnel (intake duct) system that is the first of its kind in the world to be adopted on a production motorcycle, (2) a new-design aluminum frame and (3)a new exterior design that uses finely defined edges to create a feeling of dynamism. This new model has styling that overturns conventional ideas of how a production motorcycle looks. And, while continuing the proud R1 tradition of offering both the highest level of performance on hilly roads and cornering performance, Yamaha has also boosted the new R1's performance in circuit riding dramatically. All this makes the new YZF-R1 the next-generation supersport that sets a high new standard for overall performance and quality.

2007 European market model Yamaha "YZF-R1"

Name:

Yamaha "YZF-R1"

Release date:

Beginning from November 2006
(Date to vary with the different European distributors)

Main Features

1) "YCC-I" (Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake)
This model adopts a newly designed liquid-cooled DOHC, in-line 4-cylinder, 4-valve/cylinder engine. It also adopts the "YCC-I" (Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake) electronic-control servo motor-driven variable air funnel (intake duct) system, which is the first of its kind in the world to be adopted on a production motorcycle. This system enables optimum performance in both the low- to mid-speed range and the high-speed range. The intake ducts (funnels) are each divided into upper and lower portions that in their normal connected position create a single funnel for fresh air intake. When engine rpm and throttle opening exceed a certain level the funnel parts separate in a way that only the shorter bottom part functions as the intake duct. This enables smooth torque development across the entire rpm range.

2) New aluminum frame deigned for outstanding cornering performance
A new-design aluminum Deltabox frame has been adopted. It features a box structure welded together from cast aluminum parts for the inside halves and extruded (non-cast) aluminum parts for the outside halves to achieve optimum strength/rigidity balance. This new frame is characterized by its stability at high speeds and its outstanding cornering performance and response.

3) New exterior design in the image of an athlete's body
This model adopts a new body design that suggests the muscular beauty of an athlete's body. It is a design that uses finely defined edges to create a feeling of dynamism.

4) Other features
Other features include, (1) "YCC-T" (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) for smoother power development, (2) oblate elliptical shaped up-slanted muffler with a striking new look, (3) 3-way catalyzer with oxygen sensor for outstanding environmental friendliness, (4) improved front and rear suspension performance and (5) Front disc brake with 6-pot calipers and small-diameter rotors for outstanding braking performance.
