Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (YMC) has succeeded in adding a new "Auto-Eco Mode" function to its "PAS Lithium" electro-hybrid bicycle series popular for its powerful electric-motor assist. Also featuring a new function that keeps the battery light lit even when the main switch is in the Off position, these new models will be released on the Japanese market beginning the 20th of February, 2006.
The new "Auto-Eco Mode" featured on these models is a new type of running mode that enables a longer running distance per charge of the battery while maintaining the same powerful motor assist this series is known for. This mode functions to provide the same power assist as the existing models at times when the rider must apply strong force to the pedals, like when starting out, accelerating, climbing hills or riding into the wind, but then it shuts off the power assist automatically at times when little force is being applied to the pedals. In other words, this is a system that automatically switches the assist function on and off depending on the load force sensed at the pedals. During normal riding (General Road Pattern*1) with the "Auto-Eco Mode," the distance that can be run on one charging of the battery is increased by about 60% (*2).
With the new "Battery Lamp System," the headlight is powered by the main battery even when the main switch is turned off unlike the previous system where the main switch had to be on in order for the headlight to light.
Also added to the PAS Lithium series is a new "PAS CITY-S Lithium L" model that adds a 7.5 Ah lithium-ion battery to the existing "PAS CITY-S Lithium" model with its 27-inch wheels that are usually the choice of male riders using bicycles for commuting to work or school. |

General Road Pattern: Based on data taken from tests with a new battery at an air temp. of 25°C. carrying a weight (weight of rider and luggage) of 60 kg, on a dry, flat road without wind and without the headlight on in the standard mode and run over a designated 5 km course consisting 3 km of flat, 1 km of 2-degree uphill and 1 km of 2-degree downhill is run at a speed of 15 km/h on the flat in 3rd gear, 10 km/h on uphills in 2nd gear and 20 km/h on downhills in 3rd gear. |
*2 |
In the case of the "PAS Lithium L" riding in the power mode, the running distance on one charging of the battery is increased from 53 km to 85 km. |

60,000 units(PZ series, annual, domestic)
*The PZ series includes the above five lightweight body models and the PAS models mounting nickel-metal hydride batteries |
Ever since the release of the first Yamaha PAS in 1993, YMC has continued to increase the product value of the PAS series models by developing increasingly compact, lightweight PAS units and improving the performance of the batteries, while maintaining the same original development ideal of "giving top priority to human sensibilities." As of Dec. 2005, approximately 800,000 units of PAS bicycles have been shipped from our factory, as the PAS has become the leading name in electro-hybrid bicycles used and loved by people of all ages, from young people and housewives to senior citizens.
The "PAS CITY-S Lithium L" now being released adds a large-capacity 7.5 Ah lithium-ion battery to the existing "PAS CITY-S Lithium," a sporty model that enjoys a high level of demand as a bicycle for commuting to work or school. The addition of this battery makes it a 27-inch tire model that achieves a longer running distance per charge while maintaining the same powerful motor assist.
Adopting features like stainless steel rims and spokes and a new long-life tire for the rear wheel, where wear occurs most prominently. These features further improve product quality as a long-running model. It is also fitted with an extra large stainless steel basket that can hold an L sized business briefcase* for added convenience in commuting.

"Auto-Eco Mode" for powerful assist and increased running distance
(About 60% *longer than existing models)
The new "Auto-Eco Mode" is a new type of running mode that automatically switches the assist function on and off depending on the load force sensed at the pedals. Utilizing Yamaha's advanced control technologies, this system is characterized by the naturalness and smoothness of the switching. The rider can choose between four modes depending on use.
* With the "PAS Lithium L" riding in the power mode, the running distance is increased from 53 km to 85 km.

Compared to Yamaha's same product run on the Yamaha "General Road Pattern" in Standard Mode and Power Mode |
* |
Because normal assist force is applied when running for extended periods on uphills, etc. where an assist is needed, the running distance will be the same whether the "Auto-Eco Mode" is On or Off |

General Road Pattern: Repetitions of a 5-km course consisting of three 1-km sections of flat road ,1-km of 3.5% (2-degree) incline and the same amount of decline |

Compact, lightweight, high output lithium-ion battery and "Power Mode"
The adoption of a lithium-ion battery gives these models outstanding assist power. Also, a new "Power Mode" has been adopted to provide added power in situations like riding up hills or into the wind or when riding with a child in the child seat or a heavy load of baggage.
With the lithium-ion battery "top-off" charging is possible and the charging itself is easily performed with the "stand-up" type charger. |
