EUROPE CONTEST REPORT 2016

  • COMPETITION OUTLINE

    As a part of the Yamaha Technical Academy, Yamaha Motor Europe has organized the fifth edition of the European Technician Grand Prix (ETGP) on the 19th and 20th of September at the European headquarter in the Netherlands. During the ETGP 10 technicians from different European countries competed to become the best Yamaha technician of Europe. All participating technicians qualified themselves by winning the National Technician Grand Prix in their home country. The best 3 of Europe will compete in the WTGP in Japan.
    The ETGP is run over a 3 day period:

    • Day 1: Welcome and competition part 1
    • Day 2: Competition part 2, Yamaha tour and official ceremony
    • Day 3: Fun and sightseeing with the "Yamaha family"

COMPETITION CONTENTS

During the competition each technician had to work on 6 hand-on tasks and 2 theoretical tasks. The theoretical tasks were all done via the modern Yamaha online Learning Management System so that the technicians could already see their result upon completion. The tasks were aimed on technical knowledge and usage of the service portal including. The hands-on tasks were aimed to test variety of skills and were all based on "real life cases".

Task 1: Replacing an ABS pump (wrenching skills and speed)
Task 2: Troubleshooting about Fuel Injection system using the Yamaha Diagnostic Tool (troubleshooting and YDT skills).
Task 3: Replacing the piston of a scooter engine (wrenching skills and speed)
Task 4: Troubleshooting about charging system (Troubleshooting and electrical measuring skills)
Task 5: Service inspection and Dynamic test using the Yamaha Diagnostic Tool (Service and YDT skills)
Task 6: Measuring a clutch and crankshaft of an YZ competition model (Mechanical measuring skills)

What motivated you to take up the WTGP challenge?
The winning of the national contest gave me a lot of motivation. So I learned a lot in my free time and with my trainer Daniel Matter for the European contest. After the great time at YME and the winning of ETGP my motivation is endless. It is incredible and such a great gift to be a part of the WTGP and visit Japan.
What effort did you make to win the National Contest?
I've studied the YTA Silver-trainings lots of time. Also my education, the Master examination, gave me a great understanding of the current technology.
Let us know the activities or services your shop is doing to go beyond the expectations of the customers, if any.
We just want to offer perfect service each time we maintain or repair a bike. A satisfied customer keeps coming back and we always listen to their feedback on our performance.
When do you find your job rewarding?
If the customer is satisfied and smiles about the shiny Bike it makes me happy. We can make dreams come true and help with our knowledge. It is a great job.
What is your favorite point about Yamaha?
I love everything about Yamaha. The quality, the emotions of the Bikes and the great peoples in the background. It gives me a good feeling to be a part of this great family.
What challenge do you want to take up or be passionate about in your work from here on in?
Every time I want be better and faster. The target is to make every customer happy and give him the best possible service.
What are your aspirations for the 2016 WTGP?
Enjoy every second!!! It is a great pleasure to be a part of the WTGP. I'll Do my best and see what happens.

What motivated you to take up the WTGP challenge?
The experience to participate in such a contest is very interesting, also to know other nations and their ways of working.
What effort did you make to win the National Contest?
I've studied the operation of various systems in the service manual, training materials and other media. In addition my daily job also give me lots of things to keep learning.
Let us know the activities or services your shop is doing to go beyond the expectations of the customers, if any.
In addition to the regular service we also offer a special Yamaha winter service. We also organize motorcycle tours with our customers where we start all together with a good breakfast. If we sell a new motorcycle we always make a picture of the customer with his new bike!
When do you find your job rewarding?
I like my job if I have found an error after a long search and the vehicle is running again. Of course it is always rewarding when the customer is satisfied.
What is your favorite point about Yamaha?
At Yamaha I like the fact that mechanics are not just men / women that are working on vehicles but we are the most important link, Yamaha Family, in the chain between the customer and vehicle. The training is very good and the support in case of problems also works well!
What challenge do you want to take up or be passionate about in your work from here on in?
I will continue with what I'm doing now, I think with all the knowledge of the competition I will even have a better approach to various problems. Make a clear plan and fix it right the first time!
What are your aspirations for the 2016 WTGP?
Of course I hope for a good result at the WTGP but participation only is already rewarding for me. There are certainly many talented participants, therefore it will definitely not be easy but I'll try very hard.

What motivated you to take up the WTGP challenge?
I would like to see how high my personal level was, I did not expect my score would be so high that I would end up as the first of the Netherlands and even third best of Europe.
What effort did you make to win the National Contest?
Before the national contest I studied the latest online new model trainings and the YTA Silver program.
Let us know the activities or services your shop is doing to go beyond the expectations of the customers, if any.
In our company we do everything to keep our customers satisfied. Customers want to be helped by knowledgeable colleagues, therefore my colleagues and I regularly go to the Yamaha head office for training.
When do you find your job rewarding?
Customer that are happy when they receive their motorcycle back in perfect condition. Also when I solve complex issues.
What is your favorite point about Yamaha?
Yamaha's very high level of service, not only for us but also towards our customer.
What challenge do you want to take up or be passionate about in your work from here on in?
I want to remain involved in technology, because it changes continuously it keeps triggering you.
What are your aspirations for the 2016 WTGP?
A nice opportunity to measure my personal level with the rest of the world, I'm looking forward to it!
