This model ushered in the over-1,000c era for Yamaha motorcycles (it was not sold in Japan). The rear wheel was shaft-driven and the DOHC in-line 4-cylinder 1,100cc engine's awesome power created new excitement among European and American motorcycle enthusiasts. The European-market version had continental handlebars and an oil cooler while the American-market version came with up-slanted handlebars.
