Development of Small-sized Scooters for the Global Market
Taiwan is a place where two-wheeled vehicles are a fundamental part of people's lives
During the later half of the 1990's, the Yamaha group faced the problem of enhancing international competitiveness. With that, the company established Yamaha Motor R&D Taiwan Co., Ltd. (YMRT) in 1997 as its first overseas product development location for the purpose of establishing a base location in Taiwan, one of the world's "scooter capitals," to develop 150 cc and small-sized scooters for the global market. Manufacturing base Yamaha Motor Taiwan Co., Ltd. (YMT) was involved in product production for ten years prior to the establishment of YMRT, which has functioned as an independent company for 20 years. In addition to the Taiwan market, YMRT develops small-sized scooters for markets around the world.
Taiwan has attracted attention for its landmark building Taipei 101, once the world's tallest building until the emergence of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The population of Taiwan is approximately 23 million who own more than 10 million two-wheeled vehicles. These vehicles play a very important role in daily life here. Therefore, YMRT develops small-sized scooters in a country where two-wheeled vehicles lie at the core of society.
Group's first platform development
YMRT's mission is "to develop products which surpass customer expectations for the domestic and international markets in a timely and continuous manner serving as the location for global scooter development." The vehicles that we develop are delivered to a wide range of countries and regions (Taiwan, Japan, North America, Central and South America, Europe, and ASEAN member states). In addition to holding a company ceremony to launch operations at the start of each Chinese New Year, a company-wide morning meeting is held quarterly where all employees share their future visions for the company and discuss important issues. This allows employees to come together as one to carry on product development. YMRT is involved with product planning, design, and development. Based on a platform, work is carried out as lively discussions are held daily in order to provide further value while at the same time improving development productivity. In addition to actual work, club activities are used to create relationships with employees from other departments. In addition, safe driving training is conducted regularly so that all employees can improve safe driving awareness.
