Clean Water System Annual Maintenance
and User Interview in Nepal
Last year, the Clean Water Group, Overseas Market Development Operations Business Unit (OMDO), installed and delivered the Yamaha Clean Water (YCW) system to Dhakela Village, Bardiya District, Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. Almost one year had passed, and the Yamaha team returned to the village in February and conducted regular inspections of the water purification system. The team also took this opportunity to interview local residents to understand how the purified water is being used.
The YCW Implementation Project was a collaborative effort with ADRA Japan, a nonprofit organization supporting developing countries, funded by Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA). In the project, surface water from rivers is purified and distributed through five water stations within the village with 12 newly installed taps funded by the local government. Approximately 170 households are now using the service, with the number of users gradually increasing.
When we interviewed the village residents in September 2024, some of them were still hesitant to use the purified water because their cattle bathed in the same river. But now, they use purified water from YCW with enthusiasm after hearing good things about it from other residents. A community health volunteer working in the village also commented, "We had four or five cases of stomachache, diarrhea, and sore throat each month before YCW was installed. But now these cases have completely disappeared.”
Well water in this region contains a high level of iron and E. coli, which makes us believe the need for YCW is very high. OMDO will continue to work with ADRA Japan in promoting the use of purified water and offering the benefits of clean water to a larger local population.
