Japan Magnesium Association Technology Award Received

June 8, 2016 | YMC

Development of magnesium die-cast wheels by Yamaha Motor Company was selected June 8, 2016, to receive the Year 2015 19th Japan Magnesium Association Technology Award. This award honors major contributions to the growth and the development of the magnesium industry, and also represents acclaim by the association's members.

The aims of development were to achieve both the high design performance and light weight demanded on wheels, and to improve steering stability by reducing unsprung weight. Changing the material of conventional aluminum wheels to magnesium attained lighter weight and high design performance through adoption of high-vacuum die-casting technology, achieving better steering stability through reduced weight (870 g lighter at front and rear than current wheels).

This technology is the world's first example of mass-produced magnesium die-cast wheels on motorcycles having a piston displacement of 400 cc and higher. On the YZF-R1, where these wheels are used, the amount of magnesium used is over 10 kg per bike – a first for motorcycles.
