In 1989, joined the Marlboro Yamaha Team and rode a YZR500 in the 500cc class with Freddie Spencer. Ranked 7th. His best place in that year was a ranking of 3rd in the Spanish GP. Rode in the British Road Race Championship, and in 1985 entered the GP250 for the first time. From 1987 to 1988, rode in the 500cc class with Honda, then in 1989 obtained a regular seat on the YZR500. The following year, 1990, rode a Suzuki, but in 1991 and 1992 returned to the YZR500. In 1992, took 2nd place in the Suzuka 8 Hours teamed with Kevin Magee on a YZF750.
