The 1994 model OWF9 was the machine that L. Cadalora rode to rank 2nd in that year's GP500 series with wins at the U.S. GP and the Europe GP (Barcelona). A review of power development characteristics and rigidity balance led to the adoption of a panel stock aluminum frame to replace the extruded aluminum frame of the previous year's model. Development efforts to improve the aerodynamic characteristics led to a cowl design that shifted the air intake mouth toward the inside. To improve intake efficiency on the '95 model, a forced-air (ram-air) function for the air box produced at Yamaha's London R&D base, Activa, was adopted.
