Last YZR500 with the in-line 4-cylinder engine
The 0W53 introduced in 1981 would be the last YZR500 to use the in-line 4-cylinder engine format. It adopted a further evolution of the 0W48's square cross-section aluminum pipe frame, while keeping the same basic dimensions. Mounted on this was the 0W48R engine with outer cylinder rear exhaust. In the 1981 season, B. Sheene rode this model to a 4th-place finish at the Austrian GP , 6th at the West German GP and 3rd at the Italian GP.
